Wedding cake stand with royal connection is one of 'five to buy' ideas for silver
26 October 2022 A late Victorian silver-plated cake stand with a royal wedding connection is one of the stand-out lots at the Tennants auction on November 12.
Late Victorian silver-plated cake stand used at the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Kent - estimate £400-600 at Tennants.
By James Dixon and Sons of Sheffield, it was used at the wedding of Prince Edward, Duke of Kent and Katharine Worsley in 1961.
The couple were married at York Minster, the first royal marriage there since that of Edward III, with the wedding breakfast served at Hovingham Hall in North Yorkshire (the Worsley family seat and the childhood home of Katharine). The cake, reportedly weighing 180lb and standing 5ft tall, was made by York chocolatiers Terry’s.
The cake stand is being sold, together with a silver plate gong and brass vase also used at the wedding, at the Jewellery, Watches & Silver Sale in Leyburn on November 12 with an estimate of £400-600.
It is one of five ideas for what to buy at the sale if you want to collect silver items.

Try this George II silver coffee pot by Humphrey Payne, London, probably 1746, tapering cylindrical and on spreading foot, the body and hinged cover chased, probably later, with foliage scrolls on a matted ground, one side heightened with a chased lion and the other with an eagle, centring on each side a vacant cartouche, the hinged cover with textured finial, with wood handle
Estimated at £400-600 it measures 24.5cm high, with gross weight 26oz 10dwt, 824gr.

Estimated at £1000-1500 is a four-piece Irish silver tea and coffee service by Royal Irish Silver Co, each piece in the George III style, pear-shaped and on spreading stepped foot, engraved at the rim with foliage on a matted ground, comprising a teapot; a coffee-pot, each with wood handle; a cream-jug and a sugar-bowl, the coffee-pot 27.5cm high, total gross weight 81oz 14dwt, 2541gr.

Shake it up with a silver plate ‘Thirst Extinguisher’ cocktail shaker by Asprey, 20th century, estimated at £700-1000. Modelled as a fire extinguisher, the twisting base engraved with the recipes of various cocktails, with loop handle and detachable cover, it is 38cm high.
The recipes are 'Whisky Sour'; 'Side Car'; 'Manhattan'; 'Tom Collins'; 'Dry Martini'; 'Clover Club'; 'Between the Sheets' and 'Old Fashioned'.

Savour a salver
This George III silver salver is by John Crouch and Thomas Hannam, London, 1777. Shaped circular and on four ball and claw feet, with beaded and leaf-heightened border, engraved with a coat-of-arms within a ribbon-tied reeded border, it measures 49cm diameter, 89oz 16dwt, 2792gr. The estimate is £1500-2500.
