Pop art popping up at auction

The Pop Art (short for popular art) movement began in the 1960s but is still a fashionable collecting area today.

This 'Marilyn Classic' by Pure Evil is estimated at £200-300.

One of its leading figures and most famous was US artist Andy Warhol (1928-87) while in the UK pop artist Peter Blake (b.1932) (best known for the sleeve design for the Beatles' album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band) also remains a popular name.

Here is a selection of five upcoming works in Roseberys Modern & Contemporary Prints & Multiples auction on November 2.

1. Marilyn by Pure Evil

British artist Pure Evil (b.1968) is heavily influenced by the Pop Art movement.

This Marilyn Classic (Pink and Purple) screenprint (numbered 14/100) (pictured above) is offered with an estimate of £200-300.

2. Yayoi Kusama’s pumpkins

Yayoi Kusama resin pumpkin sculptures in yellow and red have an estimate of £700-900.

Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama (b.1929) is known for her depictions of pumpkins. She has created many paintings and sculptures on this theme. Two painted cast resin pumpkin sculptures in yellow and red will be offered with an estimate of £700-900 at Roseberys on November 2.

3. Yayoi Kusama’s pumpkin print

Pumpkin 2000 (Yellow) is a screenprint by Yayoi Kusama and is estimated at £20,000-25,000.

This Kusama pumpkin print has provenance to The Serpentine Gallery exhibition in 2000 when it was given to the current owner. Pumpkin 2000 (Yellow) is a screenprint (numbered 134/200) and is estimated at £20,000-25,000.

4. Peter Blake’s 100 sources of Pop Art

Peter Blake’s 100 sources of Pop Art from 2014 with an estimate of £7000-10,000.

Among Sir Peter Blake (b.1932) more recent projects was a series of seven printed collages with images from popular culture: magazine cuttings, characters from comics and clipped adverts. Recently Some of the Sources of Pop Art 3 from 2006 set an auction record for an individual edition at Martel Maides in the summer at £4500.

At Roseberys it is offering the larger 100 sources of Pop Art from 2014 with an estimate of £7000-10,000. The screenprint with glitter is numbered 93/175.

5. Warhol print

Shoes (Black and White) by Andy Warhol estimated at £80,000-100,000.

Works by Andy Warhol (1928-87) remain highly collectable. And Roseberys is offering Shoes (Black and White) from 1980. The screenprint with diamond dust is signed and numbered from the edition of 60 and is estimated at £80,000-100,000 – the highlight of the sale.
