Near and far: Five pictures with a travel theme on offer at upcoming auction

Views from Egypt to Italy are being offered at an upcoming sale of British and Continental pictures and prints.

The 186 lots at the auction on October 19 will include a number of lots depicting scenes from abroad, some depicting famous landmarks but others showing the general landscape and topography.

Here we pick out a few examples at the Olympia Auctions sale that caught our eye.

1. The Roman Forum

The Forum, Rome by Jacob George Strutt

The Forum, Rome by Jacob George Strutt – estimated at £800-1200 at Olympia Auctions.

Three small works on paper depicting views of Rome by Jacob George Strutt (1790-1864) will be offered at the Olympia Auctions sale. The artist was a landscape painter and printmaker who was the husband of the writer Elizabeth Strutt. He travelled extensively in Europe, in particular France, Switzerland and Italy.

One of the lots at the auction is a view of The Forum which is signed and dated 1839. The 5 x 7in (13 x 18cm) gouache is estimated at £800-1200.

2. Bridge in Paris

Pont des Arts by Patrick Hall

Pont des Arts by Patrick Hall – estimated at £200-300 at Olympia Auctions.

Watercolour specialist Patrick Hall (1906-1992) was born in York and studied at both the York and Northampton Schools of Art. He exhibited widely, including at the Royal Academy, the New English Art Club, the Royal Scottish Academy and the Paris Salon.

He would often produce sketches of the locations he visited and then work them up into more fully resolved artworks back in his studio.

This 13½ x 22½in (35 x 57cm) signed watercolour depicts the Pont des Arts, a pedestrian bridge in Paris. It is estimated at £200-300.

3. Italian town

Douglas Percy Bliss picture

San Gimignano, San Marco Gate by Douglas Percy Bliss – estimated at £300-500 at Olympia Auctions.

A watercolour by Douglas Percy Bliss (1900-1984) is among the lots on offer at the Olympia Auctions sale.

The artist, who was born in Karachi, studied at Edinburgh University and the Royal College of Art. In 1927 he participated in an exhibition at the St George’s Gallery alongside the likes of Edward Bawden and Eric Ravilious. As well as a painter and printmaker, he was also a writer and teacher, becoming director of Glasgow School of Art from 1946-64.

The view of San Gimignano, a small walled medieval hill town in the province of Siena, Tuscany, is a 9¼ x 13¼in (24 x 34cm) watercolour, estimated at £300-500.

4. A view of The Pyramids

Orientalist scenes are a key part of the oeuvre of London-born painter Frederick Goodall (1822-1904).

Commissioned by Isambard Kingdom Brunel to paint six watercolours of the Thames Tunnel at the age of just 16, he later exhibited his works at the Royal Academy on numerous occasions. His work was greatly influenced by two visits to Egypt, one in 1858 and another in 1870, and he would go on to exhibit 170 Orientalist works at the Royal Academy over 46 years.

On offer at Olympia Auctions is a 19½ x 3ft 9in (50 x 1.09m) oil on canvas of The Pyramids from 1896. It is estimated at £1500-2000.

5. Castle of Ischia

Thomas Leeson Rowbotham watercolour

Castle of Ischia, Bay of Naples by Thomas Leeson Rowbotham – estimated at £150-250 at Olympia Auctions.

The Irish watercolourist Thomas Charles Leeson Rowbotham (1823-75) enjoyed great popularity in his day with his Romantic landscapes greatly admired for their execution and colouring.

This 7 x 18in (20 x 47cm) signed watercolour and gouache depicts the Castle of Ischia on the Bay of Naples. It is estimated at £150-250 at the Olympia Auctions sale.
