Five rare prototype never in production Royal Doulton Toby jugs for a unique collection

What makes an item rare and highly collectable? One obvious factor is the number of objects ever in circulation, so prototype designs and models never put into production will always be a winner when it comes to demand.

Prototype Royal Doulton Yeoman of the Guard - estimate £500-1000 at Gerrards on June 25-26.

Take a large collection of about 70 Royal Doulton character (Toby) jugs have been entered into the Gerrards’ June 25-26 auction from a private deceased estate (that of a “connoisseur Doulton collector”, according to the Lancashire saleroom).

Many of the lots are very rare and some unique, given that they are prototypes, colour samples and never listed in the Doulton price guide books. Some in the collection have never been sold before or ever seen, it appears.

Her is a selection of five rare Doulton Toby jugs on offer as part of the June 25-26 Gerrards Fine Arts, Antiques, Jewellery, Silver & Quality Collectables sale.


On guard

This Royal Doulton variant on the Yeoman of Guard (pictured top) is a never in production, prototype jug as marked to the underside. The 7.75in jug is estimated at £500-1000.

Pearly riser

A Royal Doulton Pearly Girl jug in an “extremely rare” experimental colour, estimate £500-800 at Gerrards on June 25-26.

A Royal Doulton Pearly Girl jug in an “extremely rare” experimental colour with black hat, maroon jacket with white polka dot spots to the rim, maroon scarf, yellow and black earrings, is estimated at £500-800. Marked ‘experimental colour’ to the base, it is 3.25in high. Believed to be the only one in existence.

Cardinal point

Royal Doulton The Cardinal jus in prototype colourway - estimate £500-1000 at Gerrards on June 25-26.

This large size – 6.25in tall - Royal Doulton - extremely rare, never in production jug, is in a unique colour prototype. The Cardinal, c.1936, features a black hat with white crosses to the front, black robes and dark blue handle. It is estimated at £500-1000.

Not a right Charlie

Royal Doulton Charlie Chaplin in unique prototype colourway, estimate £200-400 at Gerrards on June 25-26.

This Royal Doulton mid-size jug depicting Charlie Chaplin is in a prototype colour never produced – it reads to the base The Property of Royal Doulton Not Produced for Sale, Never Issued.

The black, green, brown and cream 4.5in high jug is estimated at £200-400.
