Five pieces of silver catching the eye at upcoming auction

Silver is bought at auction for many reasons – for example works are purchased as collectables, functional items and decorative pieces. The fact that plenty of auctions on this website offer a regular supply of lots means there is plenty of silver to choose from.

Among auctions taking place this month at which you can bid via thesaleroom.com is the Silver, Jewellery, Watches & Gold Coins sale at Whittons on August 24. The auction offers 295 silver lots in total which cover a broad range from Georgian and Victorian works to Art Nouveau and Art Deco items, and up to the modernist pieces by the likes of Georg Jensen and Stuart Devlin.

Here we pick out five silver lots at the Whittons sale that caught our eye.

1. Art Nouveau candlesticks

This stylish pair of Art Nouveau silver candlesticks made in London in 1908 by Goldsmiths & Silversmiths is estimated at £1500-2000 at Whittons.

2. Georg Jensen platter

This Georg Jensen heavy silver cased platter is estimated at £1200-1500 at Whittons.

3. 18^th century silver beaker

One of the earlier pieces offered in the Whittons sale this George II oval silver beaker by London maker Francis Pages. With a maker’s mark dating the piece to 1732-37, it is estimated at £500-800.

4. Victorian goblet

Among the Victorian pieces in the sale is this fine quality chased silver goblet by George Angell, a maker from a well established family of silversmiths. Marked for London 1862, it was originally retailed by Thomas of Bond Street. At the Whittons sale, it is estimated at £400-600.

5. Stuart Devlin egg

A silver gilt 'surprise' egg by Stuart Devlin, marked for London 1979, is offered at the Whittons sale. Devlin was an Australian artist and metalworker who became a well known designer and was based in London in the 1970s and 80s. His ‘surprise’ eggs were among his most popular designs. This one is estimated at £400-500.
