Five pieces of Asian art estimated at under £500

You can find a huge number of lots listed in our Asian Art category but we’ve picked out a few pieces estimated at under £500 to give you a flavour of what’s on offer.

1. Qing brush pot

A large Chinese bamboo brush pot, pictured above, is among the lots offered at Dreweatts’ sale on May 19. It is catalogued as dating from the Qing Dynasty.

Measuring 6.5in (17cm) high, it is carved in relief with three scholars in a landscaped scene and estimated at £200-300.

Overall, Dreweatts’ Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art (Part 1) sale will offer 280 lots.

2. Chinese vase and cover

A 19th century Chinese famille rose vase and cover – estimated at £300-400 at Sworders.

A 19th century Chinese famille rose vase and cover is among the lots offered at Sworders’ upcoming Asian Art sale. In total, 350 lots will be offered at the auction on May 14.

The vase is of baluster form and is painted with cockerels below a blossoming tree in a garden. The cover, which is decorated with precious objects, is now fitted as a lamp.

It is estimated at £300-400.

3. Black lacquer wooden stand

This mother-of-pearl inlaid black lacquer wooden stand is dated to the Qing dynasty, 18th-19th century.

The square shaped stand has floral decoration both to the central medallion (which also features a dragonfly) as well as the inlaid border.

A small but ornate piece, measuring 4.75in (12cm) wide, it is estimated at £200-300 at Lyon & Turnbull’s sale on May 14. The Fine Asian & Islamic Works of Art sale has 322 lots in all.

4. Thai boxes

A group of six Thai Sawankhalok boxes – £150-250 at Roseberys.

The term ‘Sawankhalok’ refers to finely crafted traditional ceramic warers made made in the 15/16th century at the kilns in Si Satchanalai (Sawankhalok) in north-central Thailand.

A group of six Thai Sawankhalok circular boxes, catalogued as 15th century, with incised and painted decoration, will be offered as a single lot at Roseberys on May 18. The estimate is £150-250.

The Asian Art part I sale will offer 290 lots in total.

5. Japanese incense burner

A Meiji period bronze incense burner – estimated at £200-300 at Hutchinson Scott.

As well as plenty of Chinese works of art on offer at the series of Asian art auction taking place in the UK in May, a large number of Japanese pieces will also appear.

Among them is this Meiji period bronze incense burner which measures 10.25in (26cm) long and is offered at Hutchinson Scott on May 13-15.

It is estimated at £200-300.
