Buy in to historic political collectables at auction

With a new prime minister in power, perhaps it is time to buy some parliamentary collectables?

Baldwin Sculpture

A bronze bust of Stanley Baldwin by the English sculptor Newbury Abbot Trent (1885-1953). Signed by the artist and dated 1927, it stands 23in (58cm) high and is estimated at £2000-3000 at Mallams Library sale.

Coming to auction next week is a collection of items from the estate of Edward Baldwin, grandson of Stanley Baldwin (1867-1947), the 1st Earl of Bewdley and the three-times British prime minister during the 1920s-30s.

The items will be sold at Mallams Library sale on September 22-23 and its October 12 picture sale.

Among the highlights is this striking bronze bust of Stanley Baldwin by the English sculptor Newbury Abbot Trent (1885-1953) (pictured above).

Baldwin was from an extraordinary family which included Rudyard Kipling (his first cousin) as well as the painters and designers Edward Burne-Jones and Edward Poynter (his uncles).

Red Box

Also part of the sale is this George V red leather dispatch box from 10 Downing Street which was previously owned by Stanley Baldwin. It is estimated at £4000-6000 at Mallams.

Stanley Baldwin Collection

This group of objects belonged to the late former Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin. The group includes a small Stanley Baldwin plaque. The group is estimated at £50-80 at Mallams.

For more prime minister related lots, at Sworders art sale next month it offers a painting said to depict Margaret Thatcher as she made her first speech to the House of Commons after being elected Prime Minister in May 1979.

Thatcher Pic

An oil on canvas by Alfred Reginald Thomson (1894-1979) called 'First Time at The Box', May 1979. It is estimated at £3000-5000 at Sworders on October 4.
