The European Golden Boot is awarded to the footballer who scores the most goals in the top division of a European national league.

While in recent years it has been dominated by Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo who between them have won it 10 times, the first British player to have received the accolade was Ian Rush.

In the 1983-84 season Rush scored 32 goals for Liverpool in what back then was known as the First Division in England.

Now his Golden Boot award is up for auction with an estimate of £50,000-£100,000 in a timed online sale ending on November 1, held by Martin & Pole.

'Exciting' footnote:
One for the footie nerds: since the 1996-97 season a points system using a weighting based on UEFA coefficients has been used to enable players in more competitive leagues to win the European Golden Boot even if they score fewer goals than a player in a relatively weaker league. So a goal scored in Spain's Primera Liga is worth more than a goal scored in, say, the Cypriot First Division.
And sometimes the award is also referred to as the European Golden Shoe.
