Affordable art: Five works offered or sold for under £1500 including a view of Toledo by Arthur Trevor Haddon

Three works selling at auctions on the-saleroom.com and two upcoming lots, including a painting of a mill on the Tagus by the well-travelled British artist Arthur Trevor Haddon (1864-1941).

‘Mill on the Tagus, Toledo’ by Arthur Trevor Haddon, estimated at £200-300 at Canterbury Auction Galleries.

1. Arthur Trevor Haddon’s Spanish scene

Arthur Trevor Haddon (1864-1941) was a painter and watercolourist who studied at the Slade before later moving to Madrid and later Rome.

He continued to travel widely and exhibited views of places as far as Venezuela and North Africa at the Royal Academy and also commercial galleries like the Leicester Galleries and Chenil Gallery.

One of his views of Spain is appearing at Canterbury Auction Galleries’ sale on June 6-7. The 2ft 6in x 3ft 4in (76cm x 1.02m) oil on canvas Mill on the Tagus, Toledo has a label on the verso giving the title of work, price and details of artist's address.

It is estimated at £200-300.

2. Loxton’s Australian landscape

Australian landscape by John Samuel Loxton, estimated at £100-150 at Locke & England.

Born in Adelaide, John Samuel Loxton (1903-69) studied at the National Gallery School, Melbourne and at Swinburne Technical College. He became a noted artist and member of the Royal Art Society of New South Wales before coming to England in 1948 and exhibiting at the Royal Academy and the Royal Watercolour Society in London.

This signed Australian landscape is a signed 23.5 x 2ft 7in (60 x 83cm) oil on canvas is estimated at £100-150 at Locke & England on June 11.

3. Marcus Ford landscape

A landscape by Marcus Ford

A landscape by Marcus Ford, £200 at Stacey’s.

Landscape painter Marcus Ford (1914-1988) exhibited mainly at provincial galleries but his works were also showed at London’s Frost and Reed on a number of occasions.

Two works sold above their £100-150 estimates for £200 at Stacey’s of Rayleigh, Essex on April 22, one of them being this 3ft 3in x 231/2in (98cm x 60cm) oil on canvas of a river landscape.

 

4. Frank O Salisbury portrait

A portrait of Launcelot E. Smith by Frank O Salisbury, £380 at Elstob & Elstob.

British painter and designer Frank O Salisbury (1874-1962) trained with in a stained-glass workshop in St Albans before winning a scholarship to the Royal Academy, London in 1892.

Portraits later became a speciality and this large oil on canvas of Launcelot E. Smith CBE was also offered at Elstob & Elstob on April 18, estimated at £200-300. It sold at £380.

 

5. Edward Louis Lawrenson oil painting

‘Gipsy's Evening’ by Edward Louis Lawrenson, £1200 at Elstob & Elstob.

Drawing interest at Elstob & Elstob on April 18, this 171/2 x 211/2in (45cm x 55cm) oil on board titled Gipsy's Evening was by the Irish artist Edward Louis Lawrenson (1868-1940).

The artist had left the army in 1900 to study art in Paris under Alfons Mucha and the Netherlands under George Hitchcock before opening his own studio in London and later in Hadley Down, Sussex.

Estimated at £400-600, it sold for £1200.
