A tale of two sales at Tajan

Next week, French auction house Tajan has a pair of sales to attract bidders, one focusing on Orientalism and the other on 20th century decorative art and design.

This painting by Isidore van Mens is offered at Tajan’s Asian art sale on November 16 with an estimate of €12,000-18,000.

Here is a selection of highlights from each to get those competitive juices flowing.

Oriental Art

Dubbed Oriental Arts, this auction takes place on November 16, comprising around 250 lots from furniture to fine art.

Among the highest valued lots is a painting by Dutch artist Isidore van Mens (1890-1985) of a green door in the Medina. Dated 1920, it is offered with an estimate of €12,000-18,000.

Gaston Durel painted this Marrakech scene offered at Tajan’s Orientalism sale on November 16 with an estimate of €2000-4000.

If that seems a little out of reach, there are also plenty of paintings available at estimates of less than €5000. For example, this souk scene from Marrakech by French artist Gaston Durel (1879-1954) is offered with an estimate of €2000-4000.

This Iznik pottery dish has an estimate of €1200-1500 at Tajan’s Orientalism sale on November 16.

Many of the pictures available are by European painters, but not all works are by western hands. This Iznik pottery dish, for example, painted with twisted flowers was made c.1580-90 and is offered with an estimate of €1200-1500.

Decorative Arts

The 20th Century Decorative Arts & Design sale takes place on November 17 and comprises around 150 lots.

The top lot at Tajan’s 20th Century Decorative Arts & Design sale on November 17 is expected to be this pair of console tables by Filbert Poillerat, which have an estimate of €150,000-250,000.

Slated to be the top lot is a pair of wrought iron console tables by Filbert Poillerat (1902-88) made c.1938. Featuring marble tops, the tables are offered with an estimate of €150,000-250,000.

Edgar Brandt’s large wrought iron clock has an estimate o €15,000-20,000 at Tajan’s 20th Century Decorative Arts & Design sale on November 17.

As well as furniture there are pieces of decorative art, such as this large clock, also made of wrought iron. It has a green patinated brass background, bronze numbers, brass needles and a stamp for the artist Edgar Brandt (1880-1960). It has an estimate of €15,000-20,000.

This krater vase by Cristofle has an estimate of €400-500 at Tajan’s 20th Century Decorative Arts & Design sale on November 17.

At the more affordable end of the spectrum are pieces such as this small krater vase by Christofle. It has gold decoration on a brown patin background and is offered for €400-500.
