A rainbow of art and antiques at Mallams’ Asian and Islamic sale

There is a whole host of Asian art to be found on thesaleroom.com in the coming weeks, including an auction at Cheltenham saleroom Mallams.

This 19th Chinese ‘oxblood’ red vase is offered at Mallams’ Asian & Islamic Art auction on November 4-5 with an estimate of £100-200.

The Asian & Islamic Art sale takes place on November 4 and 5, and comprises around 800 lots. Here we look at some of the offerings, each corresponding with a different colour of the rainbow.

Red – Langyao vase

This 19th century Chinese Langyao (or “oxblood”) vase, above, is covered in a red flambe glaze. Measuring 42.5cm high it is offered with an estimate of £100-200.

Orange – Buddhist altar offering with amber

This Buddhist altar offering has an estimate of £100-150 at Mallams’ Asian & Islamic Art auction on November 4-5.

Set with a large butterscotch amber lozenge at its peak, this Buddhist altar offering is Tibetan, dating o the 19th century. The base is made of chased white metal and the whole piece, which has an estimate of £100-150, is 16.5cm high.

Yellow – Glazed saucers

This pair of yellow-glazed Kangxi saucer dishes have an estimate of £2000-3000 at Mallams’ Asian & Islamic Art auction on November 4-5.

This pair of yellow glazed saucer dishes date to the Chinese Kangxi period (1661-1722). Each is decorated with plain rounded side within which are central medallions incised with a five-clawed dragon guarding a flaming pearl. The foot of each bears a six-character mark, and the pair is offered with an estimate of £2000-3000.

Green – Jadeite pendant

This collection of Chinese jadeite jewellery is offered with an estimate of £400-600 at Mallams’ Asian & Islamic Art auction on November 4-5.

This Chinese jadeite pendant with a white metal background is offered with a pair of jadeite earrings with carved Celtic knot patterns and pearl drops for £400-600.

Blue – 20th century vase

This 20th century Chinese vase is offered at Mallams’ Asian & Islamic Art auction on November 4-5 with an estimate of £500-800.

This Chinese robin’s egg glaze vase from the 20th century includes two moulded imitation handles and has the impression of a Jianqing seal mark. It is offered with an estimate of £500-800.

Indigo – Peking bottle

This 19th century Peking bottle vase has an estimate of £200-300 at Mallams’ Asian & Islamic Art auction on November 4-5.

Made in 19th century China, this deep blue Peking bottle vase is in a traditional shape with an incised four-character commendation mark. It has an estimate of £200-300.

Violet (etc) – porcelain dog

This porcelain dog of fo is offered with and estimate of £100-200 at Mallams’ Asian & Islamic Art auction on November 4-5.

This might be a bit of a stretch for this particular prism, but there are certainly some visible purple flashes on this porcelain figurine of a dog of fo. It is modelled with one paw raised and rests on a rocky base. It has an estimate of £100-200 and could be a perfect choice for bidders unwilling to settle on one colour of the rainbow.
